Ortho-Bionomy Santa Fe
Ortho-Bionomy® is a type of bodywork that uses gentle, non-invasive positioning and movement exploration to help the body access its natural ability to find ease and self-correct. When our body is under stress, gets injured or has compromised posture or habits, we can get stuck in pain patterns. This modality helps people break the cycle of pain without creating pain. It supports ease and resilience in people’s bodies.
Ortho-Bionomy® may be very helpful when the body is stuck in pain or imbalance patterns such as:
-
back, knee, shoulder pain
-
frozen shoulder
-
whiplash
-
sciatica
-
TMJ
-
anxiety / fear in the body
-
stress
-
pre or post surgery support
-
foot pain
-
desk posture
-
neuralgia
-
limited range of motion
-
complex pain patterns
-
bloating / constipation / diarrhea
-
poor circulation
-
difficulty focusing
-
difficulty feeling your body
-
Headache
Injury or compensation patterns can create disconnection. In a session, Maya may notice where re-connection might be possible, by asking the body “who” needs to be part of the discussion or noticing who answers when we “knock at the door”. That would look like a response, an engagement, a willingness of the body to cooperate, even sometimes a deep sense of relief when moved in a certain direction or just touched. It could be that the fluids might need to be brought back into flow if the blood flow or lymph is a little stuck, or maybe the gut and the spine are not talking, or the left and right part of the brain are not communicating as well as they could. Sometimes a body part has gone through so much that it becomes quiet or tries to hide, or becomes so loud, we can’t feel any other body parts. Maya pays attention to the inner dynamics of the body and notices what a body part may need in the moment and tracks the response. The investigation is broad and Maya’s goal as a practitioner is to find what in the client's body can respond to right now and to notice how that affects the body, mind, spirit as a whole.
Ortho-Bionomy® can help people find a better relationship with themselves and relate to their body more fully. As they gain better understanding and awareness of themselves, people can access a fuller relationship to their surroundings. We often dwell in our heads. This work can allow people to become more curious about their body and inhabit places they were unaware of before which supports better body, mind, and spirit balance.
Ortho-Bionomy® can be helpful in a large array of unexpected ways.
The physiological aspects of anxiety, physical trauma, fight, flight or freeze response can be addressed through this modality as we bring resolution through the nervous system. Injury and trauma to the body often result in disconnection within the body creating fragmentation in the nervous system which may manifest as lethargy, disengagement, anxiety, gut health issues or a host of other problems. Ortho-Bionomy® re-establishes dynamic connections throughout the different branches of the nervous system which helps restore calm and ease as well as the ability to switch from active mode to relaxed mode. This supports physical, spiritual and emotional well-being.
What is Ortho-Bionomy® helpful with:

Reminding the body how to self correct
-
Supporting structural and postural ease

About Ortho-Bionomy®
When the body has a choice between comfort and pain, it always chooses comfort. Sometimes it just forgets how to get there, so we remind it how to access comfort.
In Ortho-Bionomy® we listen to the body both structurally and energetically. This modality is based on osteopathy and honors the body’s own inherent wisdom. It is also principal based which means that each session is tailored to the client’s present needs and their body’s ability to respond. If the body is unable to self-correct with a specific technique, the practitioner will look for another avenue to support a response in the body.
Ortho-Bionomy® is the opposite of a no-pain-no-gain approach and instead applies a less-is-more approach. The body is willing to absorb more information when listened to. For example, within a painful joint, comfort can be available, by fine tuning angle and compression, we can find the most comfortable areas. Once this memory is re-awakened, the body may be less inclined to go back to holding a posture of pain, get further injured or push through misalignment.
Because Ortho-Bionomy® involves listening to the body, curiosity and follows ease, it can be very effective with people who have “tried everything” without success. The body is often deeply relieved by this approach, rather than by being pushed or pulled into a “correct” place. The body has all the answers within, we just need to give it the support it needs to find them.
In a session, the client and practitioner explore together. If someone comes in and is “bent in one direction”, the goal is not to make them straight, but instead to find more comfort within their pattern. We are working with what is and not based on an agenda.
The body is not designed for us to feel everything all the time and nor would we want it to, but injury and pain can create an opportunity to get curious and listen to what might help create ease in the body.
Because Ortho-Bionomy® engages with the energetic and auric fields, long distance work can also be done.

Sessions
A session is about one hour. The client wears comfortable clothing and treatment takes place on a massage table, seating and/or standing. The treatment will typically be hands on but could also include some off the body energy work.
The client might be guided to standing between releases to experience their body vertically. Maya might suggest some self care exercises.
At first, having three sessions within a month is helpful for the body to integrate new information and to get a good sense of how Ortho-Bionomy® helps your body.
Acute issues can often be healed quickly and long standing issues can take longer. Specific issues/injuries can sometimes benefit from maintenance treatments especially when someone has to keep engaging in a specific activity that triggers their pain.
Maya can work with any body type, age group or sensitivity to touch.
Ortho-Bionomy® can be especially beneficial for children and young adults to prevent an injury from creating long-term detrimental patterns in the mind and body or to catch a disconnection in their system before it has lasting effects in their lives.
Progress is trackable.
About Maya
Born in France, Maya decided early that she was not a traditional student, and instead wanted to work with healing the body.
Her younger brother was born with a physical disability and growing up, she observed osteopaths and physical therapists helping him with structural alignment that greatly improved his quality of life. She soon recognized her desire to help people in their healing journey.
In 2000 she moved to Santa Fe to attend massage school. She was introduced to Ortho-Bionomy® late in her massage training and was impressed with the non-forceful application and effectiveness of this modality. Building from this foundation, with curiosity and a fierce determination to help the body heal rather than just relieve pain, she rapidly determined that the principles of Ortho-Bionomy® offered the most effective and long-lasting therapeutic response. She has been studying the technique ever since with incredible teachers.
She has had many opportunities to study all kinds of different modalities but was just not tempted. She has remained fulfilled practicing this modality for over 20 years. The philosophy and principles of Ortho-Bionomy® resonate deeply within her and keep expanding inside of her as she evolves and grows. The application of the principles and techniques are endless, we can connect with and address all body systems. She has always found ample room to evolve and feels supported by the principles of the work. There is always room to expand in how we listen to the body and what we listen for as practitioners. And that, to her, feels at least as big as what she chooses to do with what she finds.
Working with insight and vision she hears with her whole being, and listens both inwardly and outwardly, following the body’s self-corrective reflexes in order to restore balance and ease.
She is currently in training to become an Ortho-Bionomy® instructor.
Maya loves sharing good food with friends, being in nature with her dogs, she finds any opportunity to play in water, and enjoys beauty in all things.
Testimonials
I have been receiving body work regularly for about 30 years in Santa Fe, which I consider to be one of the world’s epicenters for healing with so many great practitioners. Never, in all my years have I experienced a more talented and intuitive a practitioner as Maya. I have had chronic neck and back issues since childhood from several car accidents and sports injuries which were compounded by stress and working at a desk for decades. I am now pain free, and visit her every couple of months just for a check up. The treatments are gentle and truly nurturing. She was able to recognize not only my postural issues and misalignment of my vertebrae (among other things), but also addressed how my posture reflected my need to protect my heart! I now stand tall comfortably, and recognize how the change in my physical structure has also positively affected my confidence and life as a whole. I am forever grateful to Maya for helping me finally actually heal.

Maya Burnett consistently provides excellent treatment and care. I was not aware of Ortho-Bionomy® before connecting with her, but know I have never received better therapy. Whether my sessions are focused on the aches and injuries that come from my training as a distance runner or the energy work she has done with me to deal with the stresses of work and life, my time with her has always made a difference. She is an excellent listener. She is tuned in to the needs of her patients and connected to the energy and dynamics of their bodies and minds. I have been proud to recommend her to friends who have all had the same experience.

I first started having massage and acupuncture treatments due to severe lower back and sciatica pain. The treatments felt great, however, after a few days I would feel the pain come back. Maya recommended that I try Ortho-Bionomy®, I had never heard of this term, but I was desperate at this point and was willing to try anything. The first time I had a treatment, I thought to myself, I don’t think this is going to work as it is very different from massage. However, after the third treatment, I wasn’t in pain anymore, I felt like a new person, it was truly a miracle that this treatment was working on me. I can assure you that now I prefer Ortho-Bionomy® over massage. I now have minimal pain, and if I do have pain, it quickly resolves itself, as my body has now figured out how to heal itself. I could not have this quality of life without Maya’s expertise and her willingness to help me heal.
THANK YOU Maya!!!

I came to Maya looking for help for my 12 year old daughter who was suffering from hip pain. Maya gently and carefully asked important questions about her general feelings and movements and through those questions I learnt that Juliette really needed help with her anxiety. Over the course of several months my daughter was able to experience the gentle re-balancing of her energies so that she was able to walk taller in the world, with more confidence and ease and much less anxiety. Our journey continues, and knowing that there are therapists like Maya to help us along the way is a great relief. I highly recommend Maya.
